Co-op Principle #7: Concern for Community

At their core, co-ops are about building stronger communities and the other principles go hand in hand to ensure this. All decisions made here have the bigger picture of the community in mind. From supporting local farmers and producers to encouraging sustainable practices, the Potsdam Food Co-op strives to make a positive impact on the people and environment around us.

All food cooperatives follow 7 standard principles that were first created in 1995 by the International Cooperative Alliance to help co-ops stay true to their values: putting people, community, and fairness at the center of business. Later an 8th principle was created that is followed by most co-ops including us. Co-ops focus on serving their members and strengthening their communities instead of just focusing on profit like a traditional business. These values are more than just a list on the website, they are how we make all of our decisions and operate on a day to day and big picture level. The seventh value on the list is Concern for Community.

All of the principles work together to make the store and the surrounding community a better place. It is important to us to create a welcoming space for everyone in the community while offering products that are both high-quality and environmentally responsible.

One way we support the community is by donating to local charities. We recently donated towards the Potsdam Humane Society’s β€œStrut your Mutt” event. This event was on May 2nd and makes up around 13% of their funding for the year. We are proud to support the Potsdam Humane Society and other community focused businesses.

Co-ops can also make a positive impact on the community by maintaining a focus on spreading information and educating others. This also includes educating customers on making healthier choices, offering recipe ideas, and providing access to local and organic products that support both personal health and the environment. Through our blog and instore print outs we regularly send out this information to all of our customers.

There are over 50 local or New York State products available in store here at the Co-op. Our selections for the products are intentionally selected to best support the community and the businesses within it. By carrying these products and businesses instead of large distributors we also promote quality while supporting a stronger local economy and environmental sustainability.

This principle goes beyond what’s on the shelves. The Potsdam Food Co-op is committed to supporting local businesses and strengthening the community, not just maximizing profit. When you support the co-op, you’re helping create a stronger, more connected community for everyone.
