What Is a Food Co-op? And Why Becoming an Owner Matters
If you’ve ever walked into the Potsdam Food Co-op and wondered what makes it different from a regular grocery store, the answer is simple: it’s owned by the community.
A food cooperative (or “co-op”) is a business that is owned and operated by the people who use it. Instead of decisions being made by distant corporate leaders or shareholders, co-ops are guided by the people who shop there. The Potsdam Food Co-op exists solely to serve the interests of its owners and the broader community.
Unlike traditional grocery stores that focus mostly on profit, food co-ops prioritize customers, local food businesses, and sustainability. The Potsdam Food Co-op works closely with local farms, small businesses, regional producers, and ethical suppliers to bring high-quality food to our shelves. Shopping at the co-op means you’re supporting local agriculture, environmentally responsible practices, and a stronger North Country community. Because of this, the Potsdam Food Co-op offers more diverse items than typical grocery stores with options for all diets.
What Does It Mean to Be a Co-op Owner?
Becoming a co-op owner means you’re more than just a shopper, you’re part of the store itself. Owners help support the mission of the co-op and play a role in guiding its future. Ownership gives members a voice in important decisions, including the ability to vote in board elections. Owners have the opportunity to attend Annual Membership meetings to have their voices heard and the opportunity to vote on changes. Owners also receive an annual share of the store profits based on the amount spent at the co-op and the profitability of the store. Owners help strengthen the co-op’s relationships with local farmers and producers while building a stronger connection between the store and the community. Many co-ops also offer special perks for owners, such as exclusive promotions, discounts, or events throughout the year.
Benefits for Owners
There are several discounts here at the Potsdam Food Co-op for owners. One of these is the Buying Club where owners can special order products from specific vendors and receive a discount on those purchases. Owners also receive special pricing on bulk pre-orders such as Thanksgiving turkeys. Every Wednesday owners receive 10% off supplements and body care for Wellness Wednesday. Additionally, owners receive an additional 10% off of all Co-op Deal bi-weekly promotions. Every quarter we also have an owner appreciation day which includes special discounts and perks to give back to our owners.
Why It Matters
When you shop at a cooperative, your money stays closer to home. Instead of profits leaving the community, co-ops reinvest in local farmers, employees, and community programs. This creates a more sustainable and resilient local economy.
Co-ops are also built on the idea that everyone deserves access to good food and a voice in the businesses they support. That’s why the Potsdam Food Co-op focuses on transparency, fairness, and community involvement in everything we do.
Become an Owner Today
Joining the co-op is one of the easiest ways to support a local business that cares about the community, the environment, and the people it serves. By becoming an owner, you help strengthen the co-op’s mission while gaining a voice in how the store grows in the future.
Becoming an Owner is a $10 yearly or a $100 one-time investment (your equity share). If you’re interested in becoming an owner, you can stop by the store and talk to a staff member at the register, or on the website under the Owner Resources tab.
