From the Board of Directors

Happy almost Spring!

Earlier this month, the Board made a decision to pause the Working-Owner program to allow time and space for the Board and management to review how we structure Owner participation. As a cooperative, we are always looking for ways to strengthen our operations, deepen member engagement, and ensure the long-term health of the Co-op. The Working-Owner program has long reflected the spirit of cooperation and mutual support that defines our Co-op. However, as our store operations have become more complex and we navigate our expansion project, the Board has determined that it is in the best interest of our organization to limit the program to Board and Committee service, Outreach, and Educational activities. Working-Owners will no longer perform functions of operations. This change will be implemented with a clearer focus on:

  • Strong, sustainable store operations led by staff

  • Expanded opportunities for members to participate in governance, planning, and oversight

  • Increased involvement in community outreach, education, and advocacy

Owners can continue participating in the areas where they will have the greatest impact: shaping the future of the Co-op, strengthening community connections, and supporting our mission. Along with this change, the Board has agreed that the maximum discount for participation will be 15%. Discounts that have been earned and β€œbanked” will be honored for those who have an active membership and have shopped within the last six months, at the new maximum of 15%.

Any Owner who serves on a committee will be eligible for a 15% participation discount, so long as they attend meetings and remain active. Serving on an GM led committee (Expansion, Outreach/Education) is contingent on the approval of the General Manager. Serving on a Board led committee (Governance, Finance; and any ad hoc committees that the Board may decide to create) is contingent on the approval of the Board. Co-op Owners who are elected to or appointed to the Board of Directors will also receive a 15% discount.

There will continue to be opportunities to help promote the Co-op’s mission at special events (such as the Open House, Potsdam’s Summer Fest, Pridefest, and Juneteenth). In addition to these outreach and educational opportunities, the Board is discussing the creation of a program in which the Co-op will partner with local non-profits, encouraging our Owners to volunteer their time to these like-minded organizations, in exchange for a discount at the store. More on that to come!

We truly appreciate the hard work, reliability, dedication and skill of those who have given their time to the Co-op over the years. We realize that change can create discomfort and uncertainty. The Board is committed to continuing to build a strong, inclusive, vibrant community with you.
