Seasonal Produce Feature: Sumo Oranges

Sumo Citrus originated in Japan, where farmers carefully bred satsumas, oranges, and mandarins to create one exceptionally sweet and easy-to-peel fruit. After more than a decade of cultivating the trees, growers successfully introduced Sumo Citrus to California’s Central Valley, one of the few regions with the right conditions to grow them. Because the trees are delicate and require specific care, Sumo Citrus is only grown in select locations around the world.

They’re called Sumo oranges because of their distinctive top knot and are available from January through April. They’ve built a loyal fanbase thanks to being naturally seedless, incredibly sweet, enormous, easy to peel, and mess-free. Grown using high standards for soil health and sustainable irrigation, they’re known for their exceptional quality. Each fruit also provides over 160% of your daily recommended vitamin C, making them a delicious and nutritious winter treat.

Aside from just eating them as a fresh snack, there are numerous tempting recipes that these oranges can be used in. From Sumo Citrus mojo-style chicken wings to Sumo Citrus Creamy chicken dinner or even mini Sumo Citrus trifles they can be added to any meal.
