Ready, Set, Grow: Plants are in here at the Potsdam Food Co-op

After a long winter spring is finally here! We have numerous flower and vegetable plants outside the store that were all grown locally with no pesticides. Most of the flowers and vegetable were grown at Never Tire Farm and some were grown at Hare and the Moon Farm. A couple of plant spotlights are the Dianthus flowers which are excellent at attracting hummingbirds and Supertunia flowers which bloom all season from spring to frost. Spinach is hardy plant making it another great choice for the North Country region. Keep reading to learn more about what plants we have to offer.

Perennial Plants Vs. Annual Plants

Perennials grow back year after year and have roots strong enough to survive through the winter. They can live for 2 or more years and although they have a shorter blooming season than annual plants they don’t need to be replanted every year. Over the course of a couple of years perennial plants are typically cheaper than annual plants.

Annual plants complete their entire life cycle in one year. They’re more colorful and bloom for the whole season but they need to be replanted each year. Since they bloom all season they can be the perfect plant to add some color to your gardens. Because they only live for one year they are usually cheaper up front than perennials but can add up to be more expensive over time.
